Pandemic

The time to prepare for an influenze pandemic is now, not when it happens. It's important to know what to expect from a pandemic outbreak and exactly what steps to take to protect you and your family from an influenza pandemic. The checklist below will help you gather the information, resources and supplies you'll need to be prepared for an influenza pandemic.

Planning for A Pandemic

  • It may be that you're unable to get to a store during a pandemic to get needed supplies, so it will be important that you have extra supplies on hand. To be prepared for a pandemic you should have a two week supply of food and water. Maintaining an emergency water and food supply will also prepare you for other emergencies and disasters.
  • Make sure to maintain a continuous supply of your regular prescription drugs. If possible, and prudent, you may want to have a few extra on hand.
  • Get involved with your community and local groups to prepare and assist with emergency response and to help prepare for a major influenza pandemic.
  • Talk with your family members and make a plan for how they would be cared for if they got sick during a pandemic.

Limiting Its Spread

  • The most important thing you'll want to do to limit the spread of illness is to avoid contact with anyone who is sick. If you're sick, stay away from others to prevent them from getting sick too.
  • If you're sick, stay put. Don't go to work, school, or other public places where others can contract your illness.
  • Make sure to wash your hands regularly. Washing your hands will help prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
  • Try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth. This will help prevent the spread of germs and contraction of disease.
  • When you cough or sneeze make sure to cover your mouth and nose. this will help prevent others from getting sick.
  • Get plenty of sleep, exercise, stay active, drink plenty of water and eath nutritious foods. In general, practice healthy habits.
