Maintaining Your First Aid Kit

Maintenance of your emergency/disaster supplies kit is just as important as gathering the supplies. Here are tips to keep them in good condition for when you need them:

Canned food should stay in a cool place.
To protect from pests and extend the shelf life, keep boxed food in tightly closed metal or plastic containers.
Throw out the canned food that is dented, swollen, or corroded.
Use foods before they expire and then replace them.
Rotate old items to the front of the storage area.
Write the date on all your containers and change out the stored food and water every six months.
Update your kit every year as the needs of your family change.

Keep your items in airtight plastic bags or containers and then put those things in one to two easy-to-carry containers like a backpack or trash bag.
