Preparing in advanced and working together as a team is the key to families effectively confronting and recovering from a disaster. Get started by creating a family emergency plan that includes a communication plan, evacuation plan and a disaster supplies kit.
Your emergency planning should address how you will contact one another, where you will meet if you're not together, safely shutting off utilities and care of pets. For a guide to creating an emergency plan you can download the (PDF - 520Kb), print the pages and fill them in offline.
When developing an emergency plan for your family it is also prudent to find out about emergency plans at work, daycare and school (the places your family members might be during an emergency.) If no plans exist, consider volunteering to help create one. Read more about and plans.
Once you’ve collected all the necessary information, get together with your family and discuss the information to put in the plan. You should also discuss the types of disasters that are most likely to occur in your area. Explain what to do in each case and plan accordingly. Practice your plan at least twice a year and update your plan as information changes and issues arrise.
