Build an Emergency Supplies Kit |
A critical element of emergency preparedness is having on hand, and readily accessible, the basic items and supplies you're family may need in the event of a natural disaster or catastrophe. It's important to put together an emergency supplies kit well before an emergency occurs. You may have to evacuate at a moment's notice and take your emergency essentials with you. You won't have time to search for necessary supplies or go to the store.
When a natural disaster (i.e. flood, tornado, earthquake, etc.) occurs, it is not uncommon for basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and telephones to be cut off for several days, if not weeks. In addition, local roads and transit systems may be shutdown limiting or eliminating your access to stores, medical clinics, and other conveniences. This having food, water and other supplies stored in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours, if not longer.
And while local emergency managers responders do an incredible job of keeping us safe, they cannot reach everyone immediately. It could be several days before relief comes, and in some cases it could take weeks before you're able to regain access to many of the basic necessities you take for granted (i.e. clean water.) Preparing, and maintaining, a well equiped emergency supplies kit will ensure the welfare of your family in case of an emergency.
