It's been said that those who fail to plan, plan to fail. While no one intentially plans to fail, failing to create a plan when faced with potential hazards and disasters can have dire consequences. And though some people believe it's impossible to be prepared for unexpected events, the truth is that taking preparedness actions helps people deal with all sorts of disasters much more effectively when they do occur. A well thought out plan makes all the difference in the world when it comes to emergency preparedness and disaster recovery.
When developing a plan to address potential disasters and emergencies there are several things to consider. Your family may not be together when a disaster strikes so it's important to plan in advance: how you're going to contact one another; how you will each get to a safe place; how you will get back together and what you'll do in different situations. To get started on a family emergency preparedness plan we recommend downloading the FEMA , filling out each section, and then providing your family and friends with a copy.
Once you've developed an emergency plan for your family, you should also inquire about the emergency plans at the places where your family spends time (i.e. workplace, school, daycare, etc.) If no plan exists, consider volunteering to help make one. Talk to your community leaders, neighbors, colleagues and civic organizations to learn how you can work together in the event of an emergency. Strengthing your community, through sound emergency preparedness planning, will better prepare you to safely reunited with your family and friends during an emergency.
