Emergency Food Supply and Storage |
The are number of things you should consider when putting together your emergency food supplies. These include:
- The first thing you want to do is put together a "72 Hour" kit. This is a three-day supply of non-perishable food that you have on hand in case of an emergency.
- Make sure that your emergency food supply includes things that your family will it.
- Make sure that your emergency food supply address any special dietary needs. For example, if anyone in your family is gluten intolerant then you'll want to store an ample suppy of rice instead of wheat to meet this individual's needs.
- Try to use foods that do not make you thirsty. During an emergency water may become a scarce resource.
- We recommend including whole grain cereals, salt-free crackers and canned foods with high liquid content.
It is not uncommon for there to be prolonged power outages during a major disaster. Make sure that the staples you include in your emergency food supply do not require refrigeration, cooking, water or special preparation conditions. You'll also want to make sure that your emergency food supply includes any utinsels you'll require for food preparation including a can opener.
